Gloucester Catholic High School Baseball Team senior left hander Cody Brown was selected as Courier Post Baseball Player of the Year and The Star-Ledger's baseball Pitcher of the Year for 2011
Brown, who pitched Gloucester Catholic to victory in its last three state tournament games, finished his career at 26-3. He set the Gloucester Catholic record with 26 career wins for a school that holds a state record of 15 NJSIAA Championships. This season, he went 12-0 with a 0.79 ERA. He struck out 79 and walked 20 in 70 innings, anchoring a staff that posted a 1.16 ERA and struck out 219 batters. Brown is bound for Division 1 Central Connecticut State with his twin brother Casey next year.
Brown, whose change-up has a downward break and his fastball has been clocked at 87, pitched a three-hitter to defeat a California state champion Newbury Park, 8-2, when Gloucester Catholic went 3-1 on a four-game trip to Las Vegas in mid-April.
"The big thing with Cody is that he's one of the most competitive players I've ever had," said Gloucester Catholic's 18-year coach Dennis Barth. "He plays the game the right way, loves to compete and never gives in."
Brown gave up only two runs in 16 postseason innings, earning the win in each of the Rams' final three games. He threw his first career no-hitter in the sectional final against Holy Cross and came back with a two-hitter as Gloucester Catholic (31-2) routed Newark Academy 14-2 in the state final.
Cody, who is currently playing this summer with the Brooklawn American Legion team, was a three sport athlete at Gloucester Catholic, excelling in Football and Basketball as well.
